The iconic community pep rally Bear Down Fridays returned for a 15th season this fall. The free event brings together thousands of UA students, alumni, fans and Tucsonans on the Friday night before every home football game. Everyone is encouraged to bring their Wildcat pride and team colors as we cheer on Arizona Football!

Every pep rally begins at 6 p.m. starring the Pride of Arizona Marching Band, UA Poms, Twirlers and Guard, Wilbur and Wilma and UA Cheer.  A variety of University of Arizona coaches and staff make guest appearances at each pep rally. Arrive early to enjoy food specials, happy hour pricing, giveaways, games, activities for all ages and discounts.

“Arizona Football has been known to inspire the best in Tucson. With 15 years of community spirit, Bear Down Fridays is a free event that helps unite the city with its flagship university. It will be fantastic to see the community after a year off due to the pandemic,” says Kris Siuda, Event Coordinator at Marshall Foundation, “We remain mindful of the community’s health and encourage everyone not yet vaccinated for COVID-19 to wear a mask, or to stop in for a convenient and easy vaccine at Main Gate Square’s CVS Pharmacy.”

Main Gate Square is located on University Boulevard between Euclid Avenue and Park Avenue on the east and west, and between 2nd Street and 4th Street on the north and south, and features over thirty restaurants and twenty-five retailers and salons. The location is also along the streetcar route. Not only do Sun Link employees prepare for increased ridership around the event, the streetcar is also featured in the procession.

“Ahead of the parade we filter trains throughout the area to keep service going for the general public. We also stage one streetcar to be part of the procession,” said Sun Link Lead Rail Supervisor Nelson Hall. “We actually get to tell the band director when it’s time to start the parade.”

Hall walks alongside the streetcar as the line of cheerleaders, band members and athletes march to the main stage. He ensures participants stay a safe distance from the streetcar. This is Hall’s sixth season to help with Bear Down Fridays.

“The empty trains last year were depressing,” said Hall. “Now that we have the public back out and we’re moving people again, it just shows that Sun Link provides an important service. I feel valuable again.”

For Streetcar Operator Luis Gonzalez, working the event is a first. He has been with Sun Link since October 2020 but is no stranger to UA spirit.

“My dad helped build the sky boxes at the stadium and I’d go to games with my grandpa,” said Gonzalez. “There’s a lot of great memories around Wildcat football season.”

While Gonzalez is waiting for his turn to operate the streetcar used in the Bear Down Fridays parade, he’s happy to do his part to provide service to the rest of the route. He thinks the tradition will continue to spark camaraderie in the community.

“Bear Down Fridays is a great benefit for Tucson in general. It’s a good way to extend our hand to students,” said Gonzalez. “I look at it as the students are our guests and we should welcome them into our community.  Here at Sun Link, we make sure the streetcars are ready for our riders. As part of our community, we care about everyone’s health and safety.”

Four more Bear Down Fridays will take place at Main Gate Square this season. Proposed Transit Improvements coming to Broadway Blvd.

Transit improvements are coming to Broadway in May of 2022. The goal of the project is to improve service quality from the east side to downtown. A proposed rapid bus service on Broadway would offer a more efficient way to travel from Houghton Road to Sixth Avenue. At a series of in-person and virtual meetings, the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed service elements and amenities, service frequency, bus stop locations and more.

Ronstadt Transit Center Now Open

The Ronstadt Transit Center located on Congress Street downtown reopened just after 5 p.m. Monday, following an unexpected closure. Passengers may experience minor delays as Sun Tran buses work to get back on schedule. Sun Tran, Sun Express and Sun Shuttle services previously impacted in the downtown area will resume normal operations Tuesday morning. Passengers may experience short delays if detours around closed roads are still in effect on Tuesday.

Sun Link Takes Part in Rail Safety Week

TUCSON – Tucson’s Sun Link streetcar is joining an international movement to promote awareness during Rail Safety Week. Sun Link is pledging to uphold its reputation for having one of the safest systems in the United States with zero pedestrian-involved collisions since the streetcar’s inception in 2014. The Tucson community can benefit from applying safety principals around the streetcar line and traditional railroad infrastructure.

“We are proud of our operators and supervisors for stepping up to the plate every shift and drawing on extensive training while providing an essential service to our community,” said John Kortekaas, the Sun Link Assistant General Manager. “The public can help us continue our legacy of safety by taking a few simple steps.”

The public is reminded to:

  • Always use crosswalks at intersections and to reach center-median streetcar stops.
  • Stand back from the edge of the platform as the train approaches.
  • Take a seat or hold onto a railing before the train departs the station.
  • Use caution when crossing the tracks on foot or by bicycle. Bicyclists should try to cross the streetcar tracks at an angle.
  • Never walk in front of a moving streetcar.
  • Wear a mask while riding public transit, as face coverings are required by federal mandate.

In addition to raising rail safety awareness this week, Sun Link also participates in monthly safety campaigns. This month, streetcar workers are reminded of safety techniques when approaching intersections and while navigating trains around bicycle traffic.

“We are dedicated to taking a proactive approach to safety throughout the transit system,” said John Zukas, the Director of Safety & Security for Sun Link.

Sun Link has welcomed more than 6 million riders and provided streetcar service for nearly 1.5 million miles since July 25, 2014. Credited with drawing $4 billion in investments along the rail line, the streetcar has received multiple awards including the Excellence Award for Outstanding Transit Organization from the Arizona Transit Association and the Arizona Department of Transportation, and top honors in the Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Awards.

Come celebrate National Drive Electric Week with Sun Tran’s unveiling of five battery electric buses. Members of the media and the public are invited to participate in ushering in a new era of transit technology for Tucson. Community partners and city officials will help commemorate the event. Guests will learn what sets the battery-electric buses apart, the included environmental benefits and be among the first to ride on the whisper-quiet buses.

After the bus tour, guests are invited to learn more about area sustainability projects at information booths for the City of Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility, GILLIG LLC, Pima County Department of Environmental Quality, Sun Tran and Tucson Electric Power.

Transit Service Changes Begin August 8, 2021

On Sunday, August 8, 2021, new Sun Tran and Sun Express service changes take effect just in time for back-to-school. Most of the updates involve route timing.  A new bus option will provide service to Cholla High School and Sun Express passengers on routes 101X AM and 102X will see a few changes to their routes. Riders are encouraged to check for route changes by visiting suntran.com or by picking up a ride guide. The publication is available onboard buses, at transit centers, public libraries, major malls, Fry’s Food Stores and more. Click on the routes below for more detail on these changes.

23X Cholla Chargers Express will provide service from Downtown at the Ronstadt Transit Center to Cholla High school. Students and the public can catch the bus at the Sun Express stop located on the (northeast corner) of 6th Avenue and Pennington Street. The bus will depart the stop at 7:20 a.m. An alternate boarding location is at the Sun Express stop at Congress and Church. The bus will pick up passengers there at 7:22 a.m. The 23X bus will arrive at Cholla High School by 7:35 a.m. After school, the bus will pick riders up at the school at 3:45 p.m. and return to Ronstadt around 4 p.m. More information is available here.

  • A new end-of-line has been established at Valencia & Camino De Oeste. This will serve as timepoint 1.

To provide more efficient service during Downtown Links construction, on the morning trip your bus will exit I-10 at Congress. Passengers wishing to get off the bus at Speedway/Stone and Pima Community College should remain on the bus until downtown stops have been serviced. The bus will then proceed to Speedway/Stone. The drop off stop is located on the intersection’s southeast corner, near Anza Park.

Working with Spare, Sun On Demand implemented the platform to simplify the transit experience for passengers. The technology is also used for driver assignments and gathering service metrics. You’re invited to download the Sun On Demand app now, available for Apple and Android devices.

Sun On Demand offers door-to-door rides within two service zones. Riders can book a ride anywhere within that zone. The service launched in November 2020 and is leveling up with the implementation of the new mobile app. Sun On Demand is accessible to all riders, with no pre-qualifications required to book a trip.

New Website Launch Offers Transit Service Info in One Place

TUCSON – Sun Tran is proud to unveil a complete website redesign, which consolidates Tucson area transit system information for a streamlined user experience. The new site will serve as the cyber home for Sun Tran, Sun Link, Sun Van, Sun On Demand and Sun Shuttle. The goal of the upgrade is to provide an easy to use, interconnected and reliable website for the community.

“Come check out our sleek new website,” said Steve Spade, Sun Tran’s General Manager. “It features a simplified, clutter-free interface where riders can easily plan trips across all of Tucson’s public transportation services.”

The project flipped three outdated websites with limited functionality into one state-of-the-art website that measures up to leading systems in the country. The new platform boasts a mobile-friendly interface and integrates voice technology for ADA accessibility and compliance. The website can also be translated into multiple languages per the user’s preference.

When Tucsonans want to know if they can use transit to get to their destination, the website will serve up route maps and schedules, along with real-time bus and streetcar arrival times.

“We wanted a website that is clean, simple and accurate,” said Spade. “Our riders rely on transit services to get to work, school and other daily activities. This new website ensures they will have real-time access to information on any internet-connected device.”

Free Fares Continue through December 31, 2022

TUCSON – Fares will remain free through December 31, 2022 on Sun Tran, Sun Link, Sun Van, Sun On Demand and Sun Shuttle. The City of Tucson pulled ride fees in March of 2020, with the onset of the pandemic. The move was an effort to avoid crowding at the farebox and to provide some fiscal relief to riders during a challenging economic environment. Federal grant money was used to cover the loss in revenue up to this point. While budget planning for fiscal year 2022, the Mayor and City Council members affirmed free transit service is a priority.

Passengers and drivers should wear masks when waiting for or riding transit

TUCSON – Masks are still required for public transportation passengers and drivers. While Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is relaxing enforcement of state mandates in some areas, his plan does not apply to public transportation. Sun Tran, Sun Link, Sun Van, Sun Shuttle and Sun On Demand are federally funded agencies and are required to follow a mask mandate from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). For the health and safety of our passengers and drivers, we ask everyone to wear a well-fitting cloth or medical mask when waiting for or riding transit. Masks are also still required at transit centers, streetcar stops and when entering the Sun Tran administrative offices building.
