Sun Tran and The Salvation Army Host School Supplies Stuff-the-Bus!

Sun Tran bus surrounded with school supplies with title Stuff the Bus
Sun Tran is teaming up with The Salvation Army Tucson for a Stuff-the-Bus school supply drive on Friday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Walmart, 3435 E. Broadway Boulevard (El Con Center).

This community event invites Tucsonans to help fill a Sun Tran bus with much-needed school supplies for students from elementary through high school. Donations collected will go directly into backpacks that will be distributed at The Salvation Army’s Child Spree event and through outreach programs across Southern Arizona.

“Sun Tran is proud to once again partner with The Salvation Army to support local students and families,” said Mikel Oglesby, Sun Tran General Manager. “Helping fill backpacks with school supplies makes a big difference. We are honored to play a role in bringing smiles to kids’ faces and giving them a strong start to the school year.”

Volunteers will be on-site collecting donations all day. Families are also encouraged to stop by to enjoy a special appearance by the crews from Tucson Fire Department Station 11, with a firetruck on display from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Public Input Meetings for Route 5 & 22

Sun Tran invites the community to attend a series of public input meetings to learn about and provide comments on the proposed changes to Route 5 (Pima/W. Speedway) and Route 22 (El Rio/W. Speedway).
Sun Tran public meeting dates and times.

The Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) and Sun Tran were directed to determine the five (5) lowest-performing routes in the transit system and identifying operational and budget efficiencies.  Sun Tran identified Route 5 (Pima / W. Speedway), Route 15 (Campbell), Route 21 (W. Congress / Silverbell), Route 22 (El Rio / W. Speedway), and Route 61 (La Cholla) as the lowest performing routes.  The City will net a cost savings of $1 million annually by extending Route 22 to Pima Community College West Campus and eliminating Route 5.

Other transit routes are available within ½ mile of the pedestrian network. Additionally, eliminating the route allows for the restructuring of Route 22, and maintains and improves the service on W. Speedway.

Community members are encouraged to attend one of the one-hour meetings:

  • Monday, May 12 | Noon | University of Arizona, Student Union Memorial Center, Picacho Room
  • Monday, May 12 | 5:30 PM | Link to recorded virtual meeting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHXVXM68wWo
  • Tuesday, May 13 | 5:30 PM | Pima Community College – Downtown Campus: 1255 North Stone Avenue, room AH-230 (second floor of the AH building).
  • Thursday, May 15 | Noon | Quincie Douglas Library: 1585 East 36th Street
  • Friday, May 16 | Noon | Martha Cooper Library: 1377 North Catalina Avenue
  • Monday, May 19 | 5:30 PM | Ward 1 Council Office: 940 West Alameda Street
  • Tuesday, May 20 | 10:00 AM | Morris K. Udall Park and Recreation Center: 7200 East Tanque Verde Road
  • Wednesday, May 21 | Noon | William M. Clements Center: 8155 East Poinciana Drive
  • Thursday, May 22 | 5:30 PM | Link to recorded virtual meeting: https://youtu.be/KjVcV2j9bl0

Meeting accommodations are available upon request and should be made at least one week in advance.

To request accommodations, including American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, please contact Customer Service at (520) 792-9222 (TDD: 520-628-1565) or email SunTranInfo@tucsonaz.gov.

When would these changes be implemented?

No changes will be made until the public input period is complete. All comments will be given to the City of Tucson Mayor & Council in their public hearing packet, tentatively scheduled August 6, 2025, who will then approve or reject the implementation. If approved, the changes could be implemented in November 2025.

We value your feedback!

The feedback period for proposed changes to Routes 5 and 22 has now closed. We accepted comments through May 31, 2025.

How Does Sun Tran Prioritize Bus Stops? 🚏🚌

Collage of three pictures of bus stops around the City of Tucson. Two of the pictures are sheltered bus stops and the other is a bus stop sign with a bench.
Ever wonder how Sun Tran decides which bus stops get upgrades? Our Bus Stop Prioritization process ensures improvements are made where they are needed most, based on data-driven insights and community needs.
What’s Behind the Process?

Each Sun Tran bus stop is assigned a priority score based on key factors like ridership, accessibility, proximity to important destinations, and equity considerations. This helps determine the order in which stops receive enhancements as funding becomes available.

The priority score system was developed from Sun Tran’s most recent Comprehensive Operational Analysis and is updated annually to reflect the current needs of our riders.
