This new operation, which includes the RTA’s Sun Shuttle fixed-route system, Sun Shuttle dial-a-ride paratransit services, and public dial-a-ride services, adds to MTM Transit’s demonstrated commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and innovative mobility solutions to communities in Arizona and across the nation.

“We are honored to partner with the RTA to bring innovative and reliable transit solutions to Pima County,” said Brian Balogh, Chief Operations Officer of MTM Transit. “Our team is committed to enhancing the passenger experience and fostering a long-term relationship with RTA, built on continuous improvement, sustainability and community engagement.”

Under a three-year contract with two one-year options, MTM Transit operates a robust fleet of 48 hybrid Toyota Sienna minivans, six Ram ProMasters, and 26 client-owned Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-accessible cutaway buses. As a turnkey operation, MTM Transit provides full-service facilities in Tucson and Ajo, professional drivers, dispatch and call center support, comprehensive vehicle maintenance and cleaning, and advanced scheduling and routing through RideCo for paratransit services and TripShot for fixed routes. The operation is supported by a dedicated team of more than 120 professionals, including operations leaders, customer service staff, maintenance and safety personnel, and vehicle operators.

“Providing safe, reliable, and accessible transit options in the region are the top priorities for all our Sun Shuttle programs,” said Preston McLaughlin, Transportation Mobility Manager for Pima Association of Governments, the region’s metropolitan planning organization which manages the RTA. “We believe MTM Transit’s unique approach to operating transportation programs will greatly enhance Sun Shuttle’s service quality, and we look forward to this new partnership.”

For more than 15 years, MTM Transit has been a trusted transit partner for agencies nationwide; specifically in Arizona, MTM Transit has served local communities since 2018 and looks forward to becoming an integral part of the RTA team. The Sun Shuttle services are vital to transit-dependent populations in the greater Tucson region, and MTM Transit is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Pima County residents and visitors by providing exceptional service, leveraging cutting-edge technology, and prioritizing sustainability.

Sun Van Introduces New Vehicles, Including First Electric Vans in Arizona

On October 3, Sun Van rolled out five all electric vans and 50 new vehicles, expanding their fleet with cleaner, more modern, and more accessible rides for the community.

The vans come equipped with a lift, allowing riders who use mobility devices to board with ease. Each can fit up to six passengers or three wheelchairs. Because of the compact layout, scooters cannot be accommodated on the electric vans.

But wait there is more! To serve a wider range of needs, Sun Van also added 50 E-450 Ford vehicles built by Forest River Bus LLC, the nation’s largest shuttle bus and van manufacturer.

These vehicles are powered by V8 engine with 325 horsepower meaning it was built for durability and reliability. Each vehicle can carry up to eight passengers and two mobility devices of any kind – whether wheelchairs or scooters – ensuring accessibility for all.

Known for their strength and reliability, the E-450 vehicles are commonly used for shuttle service across the country. Sun Van’s new fleet will improve comfort, safety and dependability for daily riders.

This milestone was made possible thanks to a $12 million Low or No Emission Grant awarded by the Federal Transit Administration in 2022. With added contributions from the City of Tucson, Tucson Electric Power (TEP), Pima Association of Governments (PAG), and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), the total investment reached $15 million.

In addition to reducing emissions, the investment allows Sun Van to retire 42 older vehicles, which will be repurposed, further reflecting a commitment to sustainability. Tucsonans can now look forwards to the benefits of cutting edge technology, greater accessibility, and cleaner air as Sun Van moves toward the future of transit.

How Does Sun Tran Prioritize Bus Stops?

Collage of three pictures of bus stops around the City of Tucson. Two of the pictures are sheltered bus stops and the other is a bus stop sign with a bench.

Ever wonder how Sun Tran decides which bus stops get upgrades? Our Bus Stop Prioritization process ensures improvements are made where they are needed most, based on data-driven insights and community needs.

What’s Behind the Process?

Each Sun Tran bus stop is assigned a priority score based on key factors like ridership, accessibility, proximity to important destinations, and equity considerations. This helps determine the order in which stops receive enhancements as funding becomes available.

The priority score system was developed from Sun Tran’s most recent Comprehensive Operational Analysis and is updated annually to reflect the current needs of our riders.

Mikel Oglesby Named General Manager of Sun Tran, Sun Van & Sun Link

Sun Tran, Sun Van and Sun Link are pleased to announce the appointment of Mikel Oglesby as the new General Manager. Oglesby joins RATP Dev USA, bringing with him an impressive 30 years of experience in the transportation industry.

“I’m thrilled to join the team as we push forward with enhancing transit in the City of Tucson. My expertise in multimodal systems and zero-emissions fleets will be crucial as we work towards delivering a top-notch transit experience for our riders,” said Oglesby.

Oglesby began his transit career at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), where he rose to the position of Assistant General Manager. He then moved to California as General Manager of Sunline Transit Agency, gaining national recognition for his leadership in alternative fuel technology, notably pioneering the first hydrogen-powered American Fuel Cell Bus.

Most recently, Oglesby served as Executive Director of Transit for the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT), overseeing both DDOT and the Detroit People Mover (DPM). He significantly improved coordination with regional partners such as SMART and the Q Line, elevating Detroit’s transportation system.

Mikel’s extensive leadership experience across multiple agencies, including oversight of fixed-route and paratransit bus services, rail operations, financial planning, information systems, and government and community affairs, instills confidence that he will guide Sun Tran, Sun Van, and Sun Link toward success and growth in the City of Tucson.

Plus, all 2,200 bus stops will get new accessible signage through braille, large print, wayfinding and audible information.

In addition to new signage, 80 bus stops will received new shelters. The new sheltered stops will also include green infrastructure such as native vegetation around the shelters.

Bus stops are not the only thing getting an upgrade. Sun Tran’s Northwest Bus Maintenance Facility will also receive two new bus lifts.

These improvements are a step toward making Tucson transit more accessible and equitable for all Tucsonans.
