TDOT is recommending an increase to Sun Tran’s fare structure effective July 1, 2008, which would also increase the cost to utilize Van Tran’s services. A formal public hearing will be held in late April or early May, and at that time Mayor and Council will make a final decision on the fare structure.
Why raise fares?
Sun Tran has not experienced a fare increase since 2000, and fuel has increased from 96 cents to $3.48 during this eight year period. With the existing shortfall in the City of Tucson’s budget, it became necessary to propose a fare increase. The option of significantly cutting service to cover the costs was not a good option for so many people in the community who need Sun Tran to get around town.
How much will bus fares increase?
SUN TRAN – If approved, Sun Tran’s fares would increase from $1 to $1.25 for the base fare, from 40 cents to 50 cents for the economy cash fare, from $2 to $3 for the Day Pass, and from $1 to $2 for express routes (Aero Park Express fares would remain unchanged).
VAN TRAN – If approved, Van Tran’s fares would increase from $2 to $2.50 for a full fare and from 80 cents to $1 for the economy fare.
When will the fares increase?
If approved by Mayor and Council, the fare increase would be effective July 1, 2008.
If you raise fares, I can’t afford to ride the bus. What am I supposed to do?
The City of Tucson Department of Transportation is dedicated to providing access to affordable transportation for everyone in the community. Pima County residents who meet low-income requirements are eligible for the economy fare, as well as seniors 65 or older, persons with disabilities with the proper ID and Medicare Card holders. For more details, please contact Special Services at 791-4100.
Why raise fares if we have funding from the RTA?
RTA funding provides Sun Tran the ability to expand existing service to help meet the increased transportation needs of our community, but does not fund the increased costs to run the current system.
Why don’t you stop adding service and leave the fares as they are?
Stopping the addition of new service will not alleviate the need to increase revenues.
If ridership is increasing, aren’t you getting more revenues?
The costs to run the system are increasing at a faster rate than revenues received.
What happens if Sun Tran and Van Tran don’t raise fares?
We will be unable to continue providing our current level of service that the community currently has access to, requiring service reductions. For example:
In Fiscal Year 2009 In Fiscal Year 2010
● Eliminate all community event shuttles ● Eliminate Routes 21, 27, 37, 50
● Eliminate Routes 5, 24, 81, 82, 83 ● Reduce frequency on Route 8
● Reduce frequency on Route 3
